Lipitor and Diabetes
Lipitor is a calcium salt tablet, also known as a statin. Statins are commonly used to help lower cholesterol. They work by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is produced by the liver. Statins keep the enzyme from creating cholesterol, which in turn helps lower an individual’s overall cholesterol levels.
Lipitor primarily lowers “bad” cholesterol, also known as LDL cholesterol. The drug also helps lower triglyceride levels in the blood. High levels of LDL cholesterol and triglycerides have been linked to an increased risk of heart attacks, blood clots and strokes.
However, since its introduction to the public, Lipitor has been associated with several negative side effects, including the onset of type-2 diabetes. In recent years, numerous studies have been conducted that show a higher risk for diabetes in patients taking Lipitor versus other types of cholesterol-lowering therapies. The studies have also revealed that women taking Lipitor were more likely to develop diabetes than men.
In a 2011 study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, women were found to be 40 percent more likely to develop type-2 diabetes while taking Lipitor. The link between Lipitor and diabetes in women was also discovered during a study conducted by the Women’s Health Initiative in 2012. The study’s findings, which were published in The Archives of Internal Medicine, revealed that post-menopausal women who regularly took Lipitor had a significantly higher risk of developing diabetes, as opposed to their similarly aged male counterparts.
Further studies conducted at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine showed the risk among women was closer to 50 percent higher than men, especially in women ages 55 and older. All 154,000 women who participated in the study showed no signs of diabetes prior to the study’s beginning. Yet by its conclusion, over 10,000 had been diagnosed with the disease.
After the publication of several studies, the FDA announced that Lipitor’s manufacturer, the Pfizer Corporation, was required to provide adequate warning of the increased risk for diabetes on all Lipitor labels.
Because there is a positive correlation between Lipitor and diabetes, and because Pfizer did not thoroughly alert healthcare professionals or patients of this correlation, all Lipitor patients may be entitled to join a Lipitor class action lawsuit.
If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with type-2 diabetes after taking Lipitor, you may be entitled to receive compensation for the damages you have suffered.
